Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a certain age to volunteer with Borland Free Clinic?

All volunteer positions require applicants to be 18 years or older.

Do I need medical experience to volunteer with Borland Free Clinic?

Depending on the role, we welcome volunteers with or without experience in a healthcare or medical setting.

How often do I need to volunteer?

We ask for a minimum commitment of at least one volunteer shift (about four hours) per month. Most of our volunteers find this to be very doable and often volunteer more frequently.

Can I volunteer short-term with Borland Free Clinic?

We ask all of our volunteers to make a minimum commitment of at least one volunteer shift per month for at least six months. Currently, all of our clinicians are volunteers, and, given the time it takes to onboard new volunteers, it is hard for us to have a high turnover rate with short-term volunteers.

What sort of training will I receive when I come on board with Borland Free Clinic?

We require and provide training for all of our volunteer positions. Once you complete our application process, we will provide training information and invite you to come to clinic for an initial shadow shift. Depending on the volunteer role, you will likely have 2-3 supervised training shifts before your onboarding is completed.

How long is the application and onboarding process and what is involved?

Typically, inquiring volunteers fill out an inquiry form followed by a formal application if it seems like a good fit. From there, we will do a background check and (for licensed volunteers) an initial credential check. Once everything checks out, we will provide additional training information and invite you to schedule a shadow shift. We will then train you until both you and we feel comfortable. Depending on the volunteer position as well as other factors, the entire process can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks.

Can I find out more before going through the entire application process?

Absolutely. Please feel free to fill out the inquiry form and we will be in touch to answer your questions.

I am a student and/or possibly interested in pursuing a medical career, can I shadow a provider or nurse at your clinic?

Because our clinics are volunteer-based, we do not currently accept student or non-licensed shadows of our providers or nurses. If you are a licensed medical provider, nurse or certified medical assistant and would like to volunteer with our clinic, please visit our New Volunteer page for more information about getting involved.
